I just received a K-Line set I purchased on ebay.. It is the 'Southern Pacific Limited' #1801.  There is nothing really special about this set with the exception it had a car that should not have been in the set.  On line I could tell it was the wrong car but it is usually not too difficult to pick up the correct car.

In sets, there are generally no numbers on the boxes.  Not a problem because with K-Line you can pick up the number and built date off the car.  Well, thereby hangs the tale.  The car was built between 1988 and 1995 because it is the 6400 series mold with metal trucks.  By 1995 they had moved to the new 640 series molds.  I looked through all the catalogs I have and did not see the car.  That might mean it was a special run for someone.

Does anyone recognize the car.  I admit it is not an important puzzle but a nagging one.

Thanks, BillIMG_3975.1

Did they use K-Line boxes? The ones listed do.

They used whatever boxes they had on hand.  Yes, often they were the same boxes that the item originally used but sometimes they were just blank boxes.  Same goes for trucks/couplers, they used whatever they had on hand; sometimes the trucks were from one manufacturer and the body was from another.

To see more and better pictures of the car in the opening post (plus another NTW car) go to Ebay and type in:

Interesting that K-Line would send them blank boxes. Can't imagine Lionel, MTH doing that. Using your search shows plain white boxes rather than a K-Line box.
