Recently I bought some Marx trains. Included in my purchases was a pair of Santa Fe 21 diesels and the 801 Illinois Central Gulf switcher. I've tested out both engines and they run pretty good...however, after about 15-20 minutes of running, they start to smell and smoke starts rolling out from underneath! It almost looks as if these engines have a smoke unit in them... Both times this has occurred I quickly stopped the train and examined the engines. Nothing appears out of the ordinary except the wheels and body are hot for several minutes afterwards. I opened up and cleaned the motor brushes on the 801, greased the axles, oiled joints, etc. I even got the e-unit to briefly function before getting stuck in forward again, lol. This seemed to fix its smoke problem, but when I put the shell back on and added 4 freight cars it did the same thing after 15 or so minutes of running. It would also slow down somewhat.

I'm guessing this is the motor overheating for some reason. It seems kind of strange since both the 801 and 21 do the exact same thing - yet all my recently purchased steam engines (stack smoking 1666, 333, and 490) run perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I didn't think there was that much difference in Marx motors. Does anybody have any thoughts at what this might be, and what could be done to correct it?

Possible that the winding insulation (varnish) is breaking down. Ohm the armature, pay attention to clean between the plates at 2k all 3 ends to ground. Should read infinity.  Record reading and run your engine 15 min. Recheck resistance. Shouldn't have dropped. 1or 2 ohms from first reading. If ok, do the same on field windings. Further,if avaliable use an infrared thermometer to pinpoint axle or motor bearings and that e-unit that's inop.

Also Marx motors are pretty sensitive to excess voltage. No more than 15-16 volts at most.

And I believe this may be the answer - recently I've been running my Marx trains with a Lionel CW-80, got to reading and found out that Lionel transformers run at a higher voltage than what some Marx trains can handle (up to 18 volts). Switched it out with a Marx 25 watt transformer and the 801 ran pretty good for almost an hour - no smoking, and wheels were only a little warm afterwards, as can be expected. The engine did keep stalling out - and then the headlight quit working and it started running faster, so I'm guessing the 25W transformer isn't quite enough power for a lighted engine with an e-unit and cars. I put on my 490 steamer and it took off like a rocket.

Well...I thought that more power was what the 801 needed, but that still isn't solving the stalling issue. Putting on an older Marx 50 watt transformer, the engine will run at a decent speed for a little while, then it will eventually come to a complete stop, even with the transformer at full throttle. Plus the wheels seem to be really hot again just after this short time of running. The wheels also seem to seize up and are really hard to turn once taking it off the track. More investigating is in order...
