Smart smoke units already use either an 8 ohm or a 6 ohm resistor and the voltage applied to the resistor is controlled by an 8 VAC regulator typically. So that part is good as GGG says.

You can certainly drill the air intake hole larger so as to pass more air.

You can also remove the sleeve around the resistor if equipped, and replace the scorched wicking with tiki torch wick, or replacement Lionel wadding if you feel more comfortable with that. Smoke output will be improved.
