Considering the sold out success of Lionel's New Hope & Ivyland excursion set a few years back and sufficient buyers interest in that excursion/freight shortline's #40 steam engine that had METCA collaborate with Lionel for a customized run of NH&I's #40, 2-8-0 steam engine, have any of you considered having Lionel do custom runs of any other NH&I livery? A caboose would be nice as well as other kinds of rolling stock that might be used in their freight service. Also, has a manufacturer ever made an O gauge open air excursion car? Almost every tourist shortline in the country runs at least one of that type passenger car.

I would like to see a caboose too. I would also like to have a station sounds dining car.
The only O scale excursion car I know of is the Bachmann ON30 one . I would love one for O 3 rail . As you said, so many excursion railroads and museums have them . Currently actually planning on having a #40 custom painted , but in her original Lancaster and Chester livery
Mr. Muffins has been rather receptive to unique offerings. It might be worth shooting him an email.
After that, it's a matter of having enough folks interested to meet the minimum order requirement.
I agree with Rick. Mr. Muffin always has ideas swimming in his head at what the possible custom runs could be for whatever is being offered in new catalogs, but he is hardly alone in that. Depending on where you are and where you shop could influence who you contact. I would say try locally first(meaning the nearest dealer that does this sort of thing), and see what they feel about it. If they don't, then try the next on the list.
I know Trainworld has done some, Pat's Trains, and a few others. It is just an email away, so have at it and see what whomever says about it. If at first you don't succeed, try try again.
