CalTrain is a commuter that runs between San Francisco (SF) and San Jose, CA. It was originally run by the SP. I live in the little town of Brisbane, which is on the southern border of San Francisco. There are two CalTrain stations within 5 minutes of my house. One is located in South San Francisco (SSF) and is in the middle of a UP Rail Yard. The other is the Bayshore station which is located on a large stretch of vacant ground (in SF)...that used to be the Southern Pacific Bayshore Yard. This SP yard had a roundhouse, tower and shops. It shut down in the mid-1980's and by the early 90's most of the track and buildings were gone. The only remains are the brick roundhouse and a tender shop (which is now a fuel company). The other day my son and I hopped on CalTrain at the SSF station to go northbound into SF. We took the train into San Francisco to meet her at her work office and go out to dinner. We also take it to go to San Francisco Giants baseball games. My wife works 2 blocks away from AT&T Park where they play. It is a fun ride of about 20-30 minutes. It travels over much of the old SP mainline, over girder bridges and thru the eastern part of the city. We traveled past the old roundhouse, the tender shop and some of the remaining small yard buildings. CalTrain also goes thru several tunnels. The end of the line is at the station located at 4th and Townsend streets in San Francisco. We just traveled a short stretch of the line to the north. Matt
