It has been said the riding private cars is not an acquired taste. One takes to it instantly! Now, trips are expensive, but sometimes one can get shorter rides for less cost. Family commitments prevented me from taking the full Mount Vernon Chicago adventure that left New York yesterday, but I was able to get a short ride to Charlottesville, VA. Here's a few photos. I can add more if there is interest.

After leaving Washington, we pass between northbound trains. and, the freight has a CABOOSE!  When was the last time you saw a caboose on a long mixed freight?

At Charlottesville, and upon departure. Buddy Mike waves farewell as he continues the adventure. I'd have to wait for #50 and return to Baltimore.

More photos of trains and scenes to follow as I have time over the next few days, but I wanted to give a brief overview first.

That's a DOD (Department of Defense) caboose that I'm well acquainted with. I could tell you more, but I'd have to kill you.

"....who gets to ride on those trips?"  Anyone who wants to experience railroad history and have a great time. There are reasonable opportunities available. One coming up is this day trip to Williamsburg from Washington, DC.

At $269 for about 12+ hours, which includes two meals and beverages, that is about $22.50 an hour.  We pay more than that for lots of experiences: NFL games, Broadway tickets, Rock concerts, etc. etc.

Sure, I like some "things," (Lionel trains...LOL) but have gotten to the point in life where experiences may be of more value than things. Now, some more photos on the Northeast Corridor from the rear door of Mount Vernon. The car owner knew I liked to take photographs, so he had the rear door window crystal clean.

Yeah, but a lot more in plane fares to get there if you don't live on that part of the continent... Just sayin'. Not a lot of trips like that up my neck of the woods. Most of the private varnish runs out my way are apparent private events.
