Next week, as you know, our orders are due into MTH for guaranteed delivery of items in the 2014 Volume 2 RailKing and Premier Catalog. Obviously, we hope you order from us, but we also wanted to let you know about a special run we are doing with MTH as you plan your expenditures.

MrMuffin’sTrains of Carmel, Indiana, has contracted with MTH Electric Trains to produce a Premier F-3 AA Diesel Set with a matching Premier 5 Car Passenger Set and a Passenger Railway Post Office (RPO) Car. The RPO can be seen in this photo trailing the diesel engines. This paint scheme is the famous Monon Red, Gray, and White, as pictured below, prior to the FRA standardization of the F-3s series. You will note this is the original paint scheme, as received from EMD, with the two tone gray sides and gray roof.

The train being modeled is “The Thoroughbred” which ran from Chicago to Louisville (and back) serving, amongst others, the Indiana college communities of Rennsselaer (St. Joseph’s College), Lafayette (Purdue University), Greencastle (DePauw University), and Bloomington (Indiana University).

MTH is projecting a scheduled ship date of November of 2014.

This special MTH run for MrMuffin’sTrains is LIMITED to 99 sets in 3-rail and 10 in 2-rail.

MrMuffin’sTrains is a member of the TCA and the LCCA, and received significant assistance on developing the specifications for this set from fellow members too many to list. Thank you all!

The prices of the items are:

  • MTH Premier F3 AA Set – MONON - $659.95, 2-rail are $679.95
  • MTH Premier 5 Car Passenger Set (Smooth) - MONON - $449.95
  • MTH Premier RPO Passenger Car (Smooth) – MONON - $99.95

You may place your reservation by calling MrMuffin’sTrains at 317.569.1999; placing your reservation via email to mrmuffinstrains@att.net; or via our ecommerce site at www.mrmuffinstrains.org/shop.  Please be sure to include your phone number. A single $100 deposit is requested to reserve your order.

We are very excited about this special run, and our thanks to our friends and partners at MTH.

These F's were delivered to the Monon in May 1947.... and ran into the 60's.... It's commonly believed that the paint scheme was from IU but it's not IU's red - it's the red from Wabash College.....

Thank you, Art. It was a lot of fun to have all of the volunteer Monon history guys here pouring over the original engineering and painting documents from the Monon; coming up with road numbers and paint schemes. I learned so much!

You just might get a sale on a couple of items mentioned above...

Good ideas. I need to noodle on this and find some drawings. There are a couple more Monon pieces we would like to do, plus a couple of starter sets. A lot of our forum pals are supporting this Monon set with their orders. Thank you. My children are thrilled - if we don't sell out they are all getting Monon trains for Christmas!

As a Hoosier, I'd love to add this beautiful train to my collection.  Wish I could have planned for it in my train budget for this year.

Any possibility of the black and gold livery for another run in the future?

Still need to get by your shop.  Would love to meet you and see your collection/layout. Looked awesome on the local news a few weeks ago.

We hope you do stop in.... MTH released the Black & Gold F's a few years ago and they are tough to find.... I hope they re-release them....
I hope you find a way to get a set - they will be terrific....

I love the Milwaukee Road as well. All that gorgeous orange.

Monon used the south end of Union Station, Milwaukee the north end (and never the trains shall meet.)

Rusty

In the early '50s, in Mitchell Indiana, there was a blond headed boy on an old used Schwinn bicycle hanging around the Monon station waiting for the Thoroughbred to come roaring in.

I used to stand there and look into the windows of the passenger cars looking at all those fine people sitting in the windows and wonder what exciting place they were going to, causing their brief stop in my little home town.  Those of you too young to have experienced things like this simply don't know what you've missed.

Thank you to the Muffins for allowing me to recreate such a scene on my train layout!

Lionel just offered a scale F unit in Wabash.  I've seen Wabash PS-1 boxcars and hoppers, although I don't remember who made them.  A GP-30 would be cool.

Wern't those great times, Passenger Train Collector?!  My little ol' home town of Mitchell would see travelers arrive from Chicago or Louisville on the Monon Thoroughbred, make the little walk over the cross tracks to the B&O station and depart for places like St. Louis or Washington DC. aboard the B&O's National Limited.

For my money, the B&O and the Monon were the top two paint schemes for trains, and we had them both streaking through Mitchell 8 or 10 times a day.  Not bad for a little Midwestern town of 2500 people.

I've often attributed my love of trains to that very fact of life when I was growing up.

Just five miles south of me in Orleans Indiana, my sweetheart Karen grew up seeing the Monon branch off to French lick, Indiana to what was then a fine resort featuring performers like Bing Crosby, Abbot and Costello and others.

All of them got there on the Monon, riding in from Chicago, to perform in the West Baden Hotel.  Politicians and presidents rode in from Washington DC on the B&O, then transferring to the Monon in Mitchell where they rode south to Orleans and on down to French Lick.

Oh, what a day.....  Can't wait to see my own Monon Thoroughbred from Mr. Muffin's Trains!

Wabash didn't have any GP30's.  GP35's, yes. 30's no.

Here's the latest artwork from our friends at MTH showing the paint scheme and the details planned for our Premier EMD F3 AA Diesel Engine Pair. Just click the image for a bigger view. I was very impressed with all of the work they have done with us to get the details right.

We have 100 sets coming. MTH is keeping one; I am keeping two ("one to show and one to go" as we say in the appliance business) so that leaves 97. We are way over half reserved already. If you'd like a set, please give us a call or order online. Thanks!
