My wife Nancy and I were in Florida recently and took time out to visit with forum member Gary Noel and to view his magnificent home and O scale layout. Gary is a very gracious host offering us lunch and introducing us to one of his daughters and her family, and having just a great visit.

Gary built a new and completely separate addition for his layout that included everything from a very large TV at one end of the room, a Standard Gauge layout extending around the entire room at the ceiling height, and of course his huge O scale layout that is still coming together.

Ive included many photos that both Gary and I took. Gary used his brand new high-definition camera which took really nice and crisp. He has built this entire layout himself and is primarily MTH driven w dozens of MTH switches and buildings. Layout includes a Millhouse Studio Z Turntable, a Dennis Brennan Roundhouse, several bridges including the ELevated Bridges made by Bridgeboss, Crescent Locomotive coaling station, TW Grand Central Station and others. Note also Gary's very creative and beautiful xmas village and his underground station. I do love that one photo showing the wiring and modules. Gary is the fellow w the blue shirt.

thanks for looking.

It was great having you and Nancy visit my layout.  I appreciate you taking the time from your Florida vacation.  The layout is always open for all to see and only wish I could find one of you to come for a few days and help with the scenery.  I have open bedrooms and I'm a pretty decent cook.  I have hundreds of dollars of scenic material from Scenic Express and can't wait to get it on the layout.  Now that the "L" train and elevated downtown is complete I can start putting some scenery touches to the mountain area along back wall.  Time to get some water underneath your great bridges you did for me.  Bedrooms are even open in the winter, for those interest in working on the scenery.  Thanks again Jim for stopping by.

Jim and Gary,

Thank you so much for the photos, description, and offer for others to visit!!  I've never been to Florida, but I'm plenty old enough to not like Pennsylvania winters any more!  Hmmmm

Gary,

I see you are partial to the Texas Special passenger trains.  Can you tell us the manufacturers, vintage, and anything else about them.  Aside from the N&W Streamlined trains, I am becoming partial to the Texas Special myself.

Thank you

The Texas Special is the MTH Set 20-20351-1.  The additional passenger cars are MTH 20-65228, 20-66228 and 20-67228 all from Catalog 2013-2.  I only had one train as a kid and it was the O Gauge Lionel Texas Special back in late 50's early 60's.  My brother has it in his attic but can't seem to find time to get it down.  Not that I could run it.  I have my layout configured to run Command mode only. No Conventional.

If you like to do scenery think about it.

I never had a passenger train as a kid, only freight, but a good train friend who passed away a few years ago had one.  He said it had been discarded after he left home.  After he became a shut-in, his loving wife bought one for him.  He passed it on to his nephew, but I think his liking of it got me interested.

I like building scenery next to running trains.  Maybe next winter.

The fascia is far from done, needs coating and coloring.  But it is "Trymer" a very specialized foam used in pipe insulation.  Roger, TW Design, uses it on his layouts.  I had the opportunity to spend 3 days with Roger and he taught me the techniques to make scenery out of the "Trymer"  Only sold in very select areas and in a "bund" 4'x8'x2'.  You have the 2' cut down into any dimensions you want.  I had mine cut down to 2".  Bad news is the "bund" is around $1,400.  Once carved, which is the stage I am at, you coat with various items that include a glue mix, clay, and then you color it to suit your needs, with various techniques.  I was Roger's guinea pig, which I really appreciated it, but Roger has since held classes and teaches the techniques.  Roger is a fantastic, extremely talented guy and most gracious to be around.  Anyone that has seen his layouts including Lionel, BNSF, and many others, knows how good Roger is.  Roger also made the Union Station depicted on my layout on the elevated downtown area.  Hope this helps a little.

ITS LIKE OIL AND VINEGAR.  PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENED:

Sorry about that, you can tell I am originally from the Midwest and now a Southern.  Never rode a NYC subway and had no idea.  Only oil and vinegar for those that have seen one.  But I will make the change so as not to offend.

Gary,

Thanks for the info, I look forward to seeing when it is complete.
