Canadian National took over the Newfoundland railway system, which was 3 foot 6 inch gauge, and destroyed it in 1988. They rushed to pull up the tracks and steel bridges to ensure the railway would not be rebuilt. The loop was the only part left intact, which became part of the amusement park. Some of the rolling stock was re-guaged to 3 foot and sold to the Alaska railroad. They left the CN logo and reporting marks on the cars. By destroying the rail system they violated the agreement that caused Newfoundland to become part of Canada in 1949.
