Now THERE is a caboose! I have heard of this road, but is it still in operation? Or is
that just a display, as it looks as though the platforms are fenced off.

pine hurst
but they have quite a museum there, and she stopped because of mylove of trains
The A&R is still a going railroad. The shops are easily photographed from the road.
The 2-8-2 #40 on the Connecticut Valley came from the A&R. I crawled over and under it in a VERY dark shed many years ago. Couldn't see any color till the slides came back. Another side door caboose is on the New Hope Valley at Bonsal, NC. It is in its original Seaboard markings I believe

I first heard of the A&R back in 1976 when Kalmbach published the book Railroads You Can Model. They had information about the history of the railroad, its roster, and operations. They also included a trackplan, with information on modeling it in scales from Z to O.

I discovered the A&R this spring when my wife and I were in Southern Pines for a carriage competition and I did my usual wandering. Aberdeen is a delightful old town and the A&R tracks are right in the old downtown. The depot was closed, so I did not see the museum but the equipment on display was in great condition.
We took Amtrak to Southern Pines where their Southern station is right in the middle of downtown, with a street on either side of the tracks.
