Need some info about this engine. A friend is selling one, but I am not familiar with it. Just starting to get involved with Standard Gauge.
How is it as a runner? How good does it pull? How is the quality? Did these have issues? Pros and Cons? And anything else you can think of.

The biggest question would be which motor is installed. They came equipped with a dummy motor, and the customer could install one if he wished to operate it. Common motors are an original Lionel, McCoy, KMT or the Williams dual can motor.

I put an MTH repro of the Lionel Bild-a-loco motor in mine and it runs well, pulling all four cars that Williams made to go with it. I did have a bit of trouble with the front "pony" truck derailing on MTH 42" switches. Haven't tried it yet with Ross switch.
Thanks for the quick replies. I went and read the other post about the 408. The motor has no markings that I saw on the bottom. I won't get another look until next week. What radius curve is recommended?

If the motor has no markings, it's probably KMT. As far as I know that's an OK quality repro. I've worked on one and run it and I don't notice any difference from a Lionel motor. The other possibility is that it's an original Lionel with an unmarked repro base plate.
