While I have a Legacy system, I want to use manual on / off & momentary switches for my accessories.  My reasoning is that my 4 grandchildren (ages 1 to 8) can operate such switches, but not a Legacy remote.  If they can operate the accessory, they will have fun, & hopefully visit grandpa (or his trains) more often.

I want something nicer than the switches which come with the typical Lionel, M.T.H. accessories.  They will be mounted or recessed, depending on what is available to match the woodwork in the room.  The salespeople at my local Radio Shack are no help.  They tell me they don't know how to use the products they sell, & are basically cashiers.

I need to know what specs or criteria switches must possess to run the typical Lionel, M.T.H. accessory, such as amps, volts, D.C., A.C., etc.

     Thanks.

Any thing 4 amp or more would be fine for most accessories. Voltage rating of 24 volts needed would be exceeded by most all switches available.. Switches and sources are too numerous to list and would depend on preference.. Here is one example of many.

Most applications would use N.O. (normally open) and single throw is usually all that is needed.

For more complicated switching on large layouts switching using relays have some advantages ,described here
