Not quite sure what forum this topic belongs in so I’m going to put it here since it has to do with running actively used pieces…

i’ve searched and found different discussions on all sorts of storage ideas but not quite what I’m looking for.

While I’m considering building shelves at some point (don’t have much free time during the holidays), I was curious if anyone is using or knows of any store-bought solutions. I‘m looking for some type of chest or cabinet where I can store my engines and rolling stock between running sessions.   Something like a tool chest on wheels, with its long, deep, shallow drawers would be perfect to lay everything in - on a mat or a towel of course. But, those tool chests are too expensive and most of the drawers are too shallow.

I’m looking at Target, even Harbor Freight.  There’s a Container Store not too far from here but they tend to be a little pricey too. I just might have to bite the bullet and spend the money for something that I like.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hello!

I am relative newbie to o scale and have just built my layout in the last few months.

I can build shelves or cabinets myself but it takes a lot of time and materials are expensive!

I bought these shelves at Walmart and they just happened to fit almost perfectly under the table I had already built, they are 24 inches wide by about 32 inches high, 11.5 inches deep and only cost about $25 a piece. They are the typical particle board assemble yourself shelves but they were a cheap and quick solution to spend more time playing with trains instead of building shelves. I bought 4 extra shelves at Home Depot that fit exactly as each one only came with two shelves.

Good luck

Craig

I don't have the yard space (or wall space) for rolling stock and passenger cars in particular.  I'm using these Sterilite 32 qt. tubs from Walmart or Target.  They can hold up to eight 18" passenger cars or even more freight cars.  I separate the layers and protect the cars with 1/8" neoprene foam.  Labeled for easy access and no dust.
