Has anyone added passengers to these cars? How difficult is it to remove the body from the car chassis? Can a neophyte like me handle the job? Any special tools required?

I did, its very easy. Atlas has a video on their website showing how to do it. I posted it on the forum somewhere. I used 1/75 scale people in the dome purchased from Ebay. Here ya go:

One screw in each corner, carefully separate the shell from the floor and disconnect the wire harness. To get in the dome, there's a tab in each corner that needs to be released and the dome bubble comes off.
O gauge people fit downstairs, but upstairs you need HO people, or the railking people with their legs cut at the shin, with their butts filed in half (except the kid figures) also with the domes, be careful with the staircase when you reassemble it.
