ADDING A CAB INTERIOR AND LED LIGHTING TO THE LIONEL GP-35

The Lionel GP-35 #6-38983 is a nonpowered diesel that has no track pickup so any electronics would need to be battery operated using two AA batteries or one nine volt battery.  The plan is to use a series of small jumpers accessed from the top side (removable cover on top) that would set the lighting for forward or reverse movement and cab interior. The plan is to also add interior cab detail as well. The forward and reverse headlights will be directional along with number boards etc.

Photos of the modifications coming.  The GP-35 #6-38983 has a B&O roadname with road number 2517.  The powered Legacy engine is model number 6-38981 with road number 2506.

Photos of GP-35 #6-38983 are shown.

More photos of the body shell.

The removable cover is held in place by small magnets.  The jumpers for configuring the lighting to be installed in this spot.

A cab interior will be added with overhead cab lighting.

The front and rear headlights, marker lights, number boards and cab interior will have independent settings using movable jumpers.

Note: The condition of the marker lights depends on which headlight is turned on.

Good idea.  Too bad Lionel did not install a TMCC board for light control and possibly a sound board for a horn in their nonpowered units. At least they could have provided a cab interior with or without engineer figures.

Better yet the full featured Legacy version is just $416 from Just Trains of Delaware.

My main objective for this project was to add basic lighting without making a big investment in the engine keeping added costs to a minimum.
