I recently purchased a Western Maryland Lionmaster Challenger and for some reason Lionel did not put a cab light in this version of the Challenger (the manual says it has one, but it doesn't).  I have the UP version also and it has one.

Would putting one in the Western Maryland version be as simple as ordering the part for the UP version from Lionel, drilling a hole, and plugging the wires into the same spot on the board as the UP version?

It sounds too easy, but I'd like to do it unless I'm missing something and there is a reason Lionel didn't put it in.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hard to say, I'd start by just checking the outputs for the cab light and seeing if it'll light the LED.  This graphic is from the excellent Legacy document that Bruk Bannister posted recently, it's a must-have for Legacy folks.

See the arrow, that indicates where the cab light LED connects.  Connect one there and see if it works.  You may have to round up the connector wires with pre-crimped wires, the connector is the JST ZH family available at Digikey.  JST ZH 12" Jumper Wire.  This will snap right into the existing connector shell and solves the issue of having a crimp tool for the connectors.  However, I'd test before investing a lot of time and money installing the cab light to make sure the firmware for this locomotive has the cab light control enabled.  If an LED doesn't work one way, reverse it's connections before you give up.  I don't actually see any polarity data.
