i would like to add sounds to some AC locomotives.  To add sound such as TSG wow sound does that require conversion to DCC and converting to D.C.?

I have a pair of American Models AC hi rail GP9's that I would like to add sound to.  Any help on this topic appreciated.

Thanks Mark, I am that author

This can get a little confusing so I'll try to be concise...

Most modern DCC decoders can be run under DCC command (of course) or under DC current for traditional operation. To my knowledge they will not work on AC current. Contrary to popular belief DCC is not AC, but a pulse width modulated DC current.

Lionel Legacy and MTH ProtoSounds 3 electronics will run on AC current. If you want to add sounds to your AC powered engines I would contact Electric Railroad. They will have a product that will work for you.

Regards,

I use an NCE PowerCab at the workbench along with JMRI Decoder Pro on my MacBook Pro, and NCE PowerCab with a NCE Smart Booster at the layout.  With the booster there's no Programming Track mode, but Programming on the Main works.  That's OK b/c I do most of my Programming Track mode work at the bench anyway.  It's a great system, and the folks at NCE are very helpful.
