I need some help in restoring an American Flyer 775 baggage platform to proper operation. Here are the problems and questions.
1. What kind of string should I use for the moving gate and how do I attach it to the man ? Should I drill a hole in the man for the string or tie it around his arm.
2. When I aply current, the solenoid vibrates, as if the polarity is rapidly reversing, and it doesn't move. With a very light tap on the end, it retracts as I woudl expect. What is the fix ?

Any thread will do as long as it isn't too stiff. There is already a hole in the mans hand. Lubricate the device and see if that doesn't fix the proclem.
Lubricate the solenoid with graphite, NOT oil. Oil will gum up the works. You might have to clean the solenoid with electrical contact cleaner that can be found in auto parts stores. Some of these cleaners attack paint, so read the labels and test first.

Thanks Roy for reminding me to try contact cleaner. I used Wd-40 , which made it move more easily bu still not properly. A spray of the CRC contact cleaner fixed the problem so it's now working well.
