I retrieved one of my K-Line AFT Display Cars from storage and compared it to the Lionel car and to the prototype car.  To start, here is a photo of the prototype car.

Now below is a photo of the Lionel car on top and the K-line car on bottom.  The pictures are off color; both cars are very white and the red and blue match very well between the two cars.  AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN is not correct on either car, but both look good.  The Lionel car has the Kinematic couplers while K-Line's are attached to the truck.  It looks like the K-Line cars will be closer coupled than the Lionel cars.

And the winner is.......well, that depends on what you are looking for.  Lets start out with the car itself.  Below we can see that the Lionel is a bit longer, while....

LIOvsKL2

the K-Line is a bit wider.

LIOvsKL3

The most noticeable differences are the picture frames and the stars.  They are both smaller on the Lionel car.  Below notice the gap between the frame and roof line on the Lionel, while....

LIOvsKL4

there is no gap on the K-Line, plus the K-Line's frame has additional detailing.  The K-Line frame is closer to the correct size.

Comparing to the real car below, the K-Line frame also more closely matches the real cars in detail but a bit oversized.

While hard to see (also check above), the Lionel trucks (on right) are nicer with more definition.

To me, the Lionel car looks better but the K-Line car is closer to the prototype.  I say if you already own the K-Line cars, keep them.  If you don't own the K-Line cars but have been looking for them to buy, stop looking and buy the Lionel cars.  They are nice.

On the trucks on the k-line the two different pictures seem to show a difference in the placement. Does the first one make it appear farther back because of a shadow?

The Lionel trucks are closer to the end.  I measured the distance from the center of the truck side frame to the end of the car, and:

Lionel: 2 1/2"

K-Line: 3"

Also, the Lionel trucks have a slightly longer wheelbase, which makes them look even closer to the ends.

Ron,

Do these 18" display cars also have the kinematic couplers like all the other new Lionel 21" cars?

Nick

NO. Kinematic couplers are a recent Lionel specific design. K-line used the tried and true Coupler mounted to the truck with a long metal shank.

Sorry,  I should have been more clear.   I was referring to the new Lionel 18" Freedom Train display cars-do these have the kinematic couplers?

Nick,

The new Lionel AFT cars do have the kinematic couplers.  Probably are not needed on this 18" car.

Thanks Ron,

I was hoping these 18" display cars wouldn't have them.   With the shorter length of these cars and no diaphragms,  the kinematics are not needed.   I agree with your earlier conclusion between the K-line and Lionel AFT cars-pick your poison.   20/20 hindsight is always great.   With the exception of the Lionel AFT sounds car which has a great selection of dialogue/music,  I kind of wish I had purchased the K-line cars when they were released 15 years ago.

Nick

Very nice comparison on the cars. I have all 18 of the Kline cars plus a MTH baggage. would add any cars that Lionel makes that Kline did not. I am Happy with the Kline cars.

The Lionel cars look very nice and will make a very nice set. I think anyone that buys the set will be happy with it. At the Moment you can get the Lionel cars still hard to find all the Kline cars.  What ever set you have it is one Beautiful set.
