And so after all your thoughtful and very informative information that the wife and I compiled and mapped out trip routes, we received notice that the Grand Canyon RR is shut down and would reopen later, maybe.

Out of abundance of caution and most airlines are at minimum, and thought of breathing recirculated (covid?) airplane air , we cancelled.

May try again next year if there is a vaccine etc etc

Surely the right thing to do. The Grand Canyon RR is also on my list.

I must put in a vote for Zion. Truly magical place. I did the climb to Angels Landing many many years ago - I don't think I'd try that today. I also need to visit the Crater Monument Tom mentioned.

Love me some National Parks and Trains combined.

Have enjoyed all my trips west.  This year, even before the insanity, we had planned a week long  family get together, one of Pennsylvania's many beautiful state parks.  Late August, we are still positive.   Some of the Pennsylvania Park system was developed during the Depression years.  Don't expect A/C and hot/warm running water, though a lot of that has improved, recent years.   Allegheny National Forest has logging roads/railroads/trails.  Along the North Country Trail.
