Here are a few more pics taken on our trip last month. We had a fine time and highly recommend it to anyone on the fence.

Our train taken at Denali. We were in Princess "Pioneer".

Rode the Holland America/McKinley Explorer last month...wet and dreary....my cousin's

widower rode it in September some years ago, supposed to be the best month...mosquitos and black flies in June, rain in July and August, sun in early September....dunno if it really works out that way, however, grizzlies apparently like to forage in the rain, which I got a lot of...saw a lot of grizzlies (and cariboo)  in Denali, but McKinley was really clouded in.

Good lists and reasons to avoid a travel in Alaska, But there is no lock and great weather during September. Last weekend and this weekend have been sunny and beautiful with a lot of fall colors. However, we had rain Monday through part of Friday, and snow has shown up on the mountain tops. Usually September I bright and sunny.

Norton, enjoyed your pics of Alaska RR from Whittier. They brought back memories of salmon fishing from that same harbor at Whittier. Also have taken the Princess train to Talkeetna (?). I also recommend the cruise followed by the train to Fairbanks. Beautiful scenery all along the way. The Alaska RR is first class.

Don't you mean Denali National Park and Denail?...just teasing

This was our first trip to Alaska and our first cruise. We enjoyed both the 6 days on land and the cruise. We lucked out on the land portion with no rain and cotton shirt weather and one day we also had clear skies and actually saw Denali in all its glory. The rain started on the way to the ship and continued for a few days. The storm was bad enough that the ship had to skip Skagway due to high winds. The only big disappointed for me as we missed the WP&Y ride. As much as we enjoyed this trip I would do my next trip on our own and ride up (half the distance from New York to Alaska was done by motorcycle) and maybe taking the ferry one way to revisit the land locked cities. We much prefer traveling on our own where we go when we want to go and stop when we want to stop. I will also have my point and shoot with me instead on my big SLR. Taking time to dig the big camera out caused me to miss a lot good photo ops.

While on the ship I caught this in the inter coastal. It begs the question is their a rail line that connects the Alaska RR with the lower 48. I was told the Alaska RR only runs between the coast and Fairbanks.

No railway to the lower 48.

Everything is by ship or ocean barge with rail cars and air. Seattle is a big port for Alaska bound ocean barges. Arrival is in Whittier. Train to Anchorage.

There's about another 28 miles or so of rails from Fairbanks towards Eielson AFB with a huge double wye at the end.

Satellite photos get blanked because of, well you know.

Wonderful photos, thanks for sharing them.
