what mfg in your consideration has the best Alco sound?---just saying--

Lyle, it depends on which Alco engine you may be referring to. MTH has a pretty good "539" S2 engine sound with a bark and audible turbo/supercharger whine. The whine could be louder though. The naturally aspirated MTH Baldwin VO1000 has a real gruff bark with a distinct four cycle sound.
I like the VO1000 sounds, and the startup sequence is really great! 
I have the gray TMCC Lehigh Valley C420 and it has great sounds. Very different from the board available from ERR now. A lot of variation and fun to listen to. I used to just let it sit idling while working on the layout. I'm not sure what the Legacy versions sound like.
Still around today. This Alco near Steamtown is so quiet, idling, I was right up to it before I realized they were running.
The Lionel rail sounds has a nice idle to it for low to medium alco diesels. Its something to be desired for high HP century series diesels though.
