I know there were some made under just the Sunset name in 2 rail, but I mainly know of the ones under the 3rd Rail name.

audidriven - Nothing to be disappointed in there, that is one heck of an engine!  I hope you will consider posting your insight with regard to the conversion your doing.  I would be interested.

 

There is only minor differences in the tenders.  Having never been on top of a Santa Fe 24.5K tender, I don't know if one is more correct than the other.  The differences would not be noticed when operating, only if you put them next to each other and carefully looked for differences.

 

My feeling about Sunset/3rd Rail engines is that so far with the Santa Fe engines that have been done by them, they have continued to improve on the finer details.  That said, I've been fortunate enough to own at least one of each Santa Fe engine they've produced, one I picked up on ebay years after production.  I still like the first one I purchased as much as the newest one I've purchased.  They have done a great job especially considering the price charged.

 

As brasman posted, "All time great 2 rail 3rd Rail locos and cars."  With regard to the 3 rail versions and fidelity to the prototype, perhaps the "best" would apply.
