I just got the MTH premier allegheny. I wanted to know what to pull. Can someone please tell me what this prototype pulled and what would be the best to buy in 3-rail? (Maybe MTH 2-bay offset coal hoppers???)
Thanks

Lots, and LOTS of 2-Bay and some 3-Bay coal hoppers,,,,,,,,,,by the hundreds!
Thanks Hot Water.
Is it safe to say that they did not run with a caboose? (I probably need a second Allegheny to push from behind?)

Yes, you will DEFINITELY need a caboose to go with your new Allegheny, and Sunset/3rd Rail offered the PERFECT late steam era C&O caboose, about a year ago.
COAL COAL and more coal. that beast of an engine should have no problem pulling 40-50 cars with coal loads . Enjoy the engine !!!!
(and you probably thought the engine was expensive)

MTH also offered/offers excellent C&O 2-Bay hoppers. One of my Alleghenies easily handles 55 2-Bay hoppers WITH St. Charles Model Works coal loads.
Not that you shouldn't ask here, but the Internet is full of photos of, among other things,
C&O (and VGN) 2-6-6-6's pulling and pushing. Use your search engine to find things
that you need, per the prototype, at least.
Cabooses were required not only for operation then, but were required
by law. Trains had 5-man crews. Most roads put the caboose behind the pusher to
avoid injury to the crew incase of a caboose frame failure. Not common, but...
Pushers were added and taken off of trains when needed; seldom did they make the entire journey (they often do now, when present, but we're talking about remote-controlled
diesel-electrics that are on the rear as much to keep the slack bunched up as for power).
Any of the scale coal hoppers from any of the importers - if decorated era- and road-correctly - will be very convincing. Dead-on accuracy of hopper type may or may not
be important to you - so long as the hopper is from the right period.
I read someplace that one of the big jobs for the Alleghenies was hauling coal trains from Russell, KY up to and through Columbus OH to the coal docks on Lake Erie. I also think it said they could do this trip without helpers with over 90 coal hoppers. They come out of Russell and run along the south side of the Ohio River for a few miles, maybe 10 or so. Then they climb a ramp up onto a huge double track bridge over the Ohio and continue up the Scioto River valley to Columbus. It is pretty much a water level route and probably has a very slight grade and the ramp to the bridge.
