I am about to convert to BCR, and want to use the alternate supercap.  I have read most all prior posts and have a question.

I am converting 2.4 battery packs.   The more recent posts indicate use of a supercap rated at 5 volts and either 1.5 or 2.5F.  Does it matter if I use a supercap rated for 5 volts to replace 2.4 volt battery packs?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

Thanks John!  Does the resistance rating matter, I am looking at two from AVX at the digi-key site, one at 140 ohm and one at 180 ohm.

Also, how do I discern the + and - sides of the cap, and which leg gets connected to which wire of the 2 pin connector?

Thanks!

Dave

Don't worry about resistance.  The longer leg is +,  the wiring is Red is +, black is -

You may want to check Ebay,  China stock but cheaper than Mouser, Newark, or Digi-Key.

John,

I didn't mean to infer I was using two caps, those are just the two individual caps I  am looking at.  In fact I think one of them I got from a post of yours from a few years ago.  Sounds like either one would work.  The cap you show in your last post is a 7.5F cap, which from what I have read would take longer to charge up at initial voltage introduction, but will hold the charge longer, do  I have that correct?

Gary - Thanks for the input, much appreciated!

John - the Digi-key detail pages don't mention ESR, this is what they state:

2.5F (EDLC) Supercapacitor 5V Radial, Can 140mOhm @ 1kHz 2000 Hrs @ 65°C

2.5F (EDLC) Supercapacitor 5.5V Radial, Can 180mOhm @ 1kHz 2000 Hrs @ 65°C

Yeah, as others have stated, milli ohms as is .140 ohms.  Don't worry about it and you should get the one GRJ suggested, that's what I purchased.

John, I agree, but it doesn't get to 65C on the frame of a Magnavox console either!  But 65C CAPs will die in short order.  The ambient condition is not a heat source in our case, but possibly the component usage might be, that's why I asked. I realize you've designed lots of circuits and so I have no intention of suggesting issues,  but I don't mind asking for my own understanding.  The 105C components are slightly higher in cost than 65C  but only a few cents usually.  Maybe if I go by high end stuff from Mouser... Dude, I'm happy to learn, store info away, it's all good

Ok, what is the recommended voltage for the 5v?  We have a few in the club and making a BCR will make it easier than watching batteries.

Thanks John, your a wealth of information.

Since the 5V boards use a 9V battery, you need something in that range.  The "classic" configuration is four 2.7V supercaps in series.  Since the idea is patented, presenting it here is frowned upon.

I understand John, can you bundle the caps in a cluster or do they overheat?  What comes to mind is shrink wrapping 4 and wire in series so easy to install among the other items in the shell, most of the clubs 5v are the Premier ABA E-8 units.

Thanks for the info on the connectors.

You can get any size connector on ebay prewired.  No need for any special tooling/crimper.  Just search for 2mm jst connectors

It appears eBay has both PH and XH pre-wired JST 2mm connectors so choose wisely.  From what I can see, on at least one of the eBay listings, red and black are swapped relative to PS2-3V battery packs.  Of course you can choose your own polarity color scheme, but if desiring to follow convention, a hobby knife can bend up the retention clip and the crimped wire pops right out.

John,

I also use the prewired led and connectors, once I know the correct ones to get, I do some window shopping online until find a good deal for bulk orders.

I started out making my own crimps but that becomes tedious when doing 10 or more units for the club. I also would be cross-eyed after squinting to make sure the crimp went into the crimper correctly before squeezed.
