There are pre-made O gauge aluminum display shelves available, however I would prefer to make my own and use Gargraves track for a better appearance.

3" x 1" aluminum angle iron is available in 3/8" thickness. Among the engines that I want to display are a die-cast MTH Big Boy, Challenger, SP Cab Forward and a UP Mallet. All are heavy die cast engines. Assuming the 1" side is securely fastened to wall studs, will the 3/8" thickness support a line of heavy engines without issue?

I'll speculate that there would be no concern with steel, but aluminum would be preferred if it is up to the task.

When I installed my aluminum shelves, I found that GRK cabinet screws worked really well. Drill a 5/32" hole in the shelf where it will hit a stud, and the cabinet screws go in very easily, especially if you have an impact driver. I put screws in every stud, which probably was overkill.

As for the 1/8" thickness, I have no idea if that's enough. If I were going to use it, I'd install a section and test it with something other than a train to see if it can handle the weight. If it works, your shelves will look great with the GG track.
