Guys,
I have been taking the shells off of my locomotives and lubing anything and everything that rubs together, using grease.
But, in two of the locos, I have noticed that there is an upsidedown metal button, supported by a spring, which swings back and forth as part of the truck, and presses down onto the metal frame of the locomotive.
Here is a picture of one of these buttons, inside of my Lionel NW-2 with a Pullmor Motor. The metal button is on the bottom of the spring, and is pushed down onto the frame. It swings from side to side with the truck assembly, always in contact with the frame. Actually, the NW-2 has two of these assemblies, one for each truck.
I was about to put grease on the frame, under the button, so that this button would slide back and forth on a greased area, but then it struck me that maybe the purpose of this gliding button is to bring the negative current up through the trucks and into the frame itself. If so, I would assume that it should not be greased, as this would impair the current.
Does anybody know whether this section of the frame should be greased or not? Does it carry a current?
Thanks for all info.
