Included in the lot of American Flyer trains I recently purchased was a 293 steam locomotive with its original corrugated wrap.
The wrap has two die cut rectangular openings cut out close to one end, close to the inner portion of the piece. I assume the opening is to avoid placing pressure on some part of the engine or tender. I have not been able to figure out where. 
Can anyone advise me?
