A couple of months ago I picked up this engine at a local auction.  It appeared to be mint in the box, but when I tested it I could only get it to go in one direction, and the RailSounds didn’t work.  No matter what I set the switches to underneath, it would only go in one direction and with no sounds.  So I took the shell off thinking maybe there was a loose wire or two.  Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it had been gutted by a previous owner!  There is no reverse unit or RailSounds board in it.  Someone cut out all the electronic components except the speaker, and wired the two can motors directly to a diode bridge so it only runs in one direction.  What a waste!

Anyway, I didn't pay much for it, so I’m thinking of buying ERR boards to convert this one to TMCC with sound, and perhaps add coil couplers.  The documentation on the Mini-Commander II shows it can handle two motors, LEDs and coil couplers, and at $35 it is hard to beat. But the Cruise Commander Lite is a bit more robust and of course adds the benefits of the cruise function.  However it is more than twice the price at $80.

Not having ever installed one, are the benefits of the Cruise Commander Lite worth the extra expense?  I have installed Mini-Commander boards in several engines before, but never a cruise type board.  Just looking for opinions here.  Thanks!

Well, I don't have a layout yet, but when I do I want an elevated line on it.  But I expect it will be a level elevated line, with an access track between it and the lower level track.  As such that access track would not have unattended trains running up or down hill, so I suppose the cruise function would not be necessary.

According to what I read and by examining my own that locomotive didn't have Railsounds.  It did have a horn.  That is what the speaker is for.  Also, it had only one can motor that was horizontal in the truck not two vertical motors like yours.

Yours was the older  48008 with a single motor and silver trucks from 1991. This appears to be a  48075 with 2 vertical motors and black trucks from 2008. It was marked #378 on the numberboards.

Ok, so the manual for this engine (https://www.lionelsupport.com/...s/57536748075250.pdf) says it has two can motors and the "TrainSounds sound system", i.e. horn and bell sounds only.  But that's a moot point since the sound card is gone now.  Not sure which Commander board I'll go with (Cruise, DC or Mini), but I will definitely get the EP-5 Railsounds board when I do.   Thanks for all the suggestions!
