American Flyer O gauge 3112

I picked up a prewar American Flyer set w/ a 3112 electric engine. It lights up but will not run. The wheels turn with some force. I want to remove the cab to look at the motor. It looks like it is held on by the metal tabs. Is there anyway to remove the cab w/o having to open the tabs?
