If my recollection is correct the truck shown in the photo was made by AF in 1938 only. All of the O gauge trains in that catalog, after the four cheap sets at the front, show "AUTOMATIC COUPLERS". All of the illustrations of car ends in that catalog show no couplers. On the back page there is "Automatic Couplers Included on all 9 1/2" Cars" In 1939, they were replaced by the "gravity type" couplers.

IS this the 1938 coupler ? And was it only in 1938, or also in 1937 ?

You are correct, 1938 only and interestingly they will couple to a Lionel Postwar Knuckle coupler.

Actually, those couplers came only on the 9 1/2 inch cars in 1938 and only on the 6 inch cars in 1939.

In 1938, the 6 inch cars retained the hook couplers and the 6 inch cars never had the link couplers from the factory.
