My son would like one. I know Lionel made one in '89-'90 or thereabout, and I believe one was cataloged again not too long ago. Problem I have is he wants some sound and the older one would require a refit -do-able but not easy in that tight shell, and from what I have seen the new can motor GGs have one motor, which is a no-go for me. (I think can or traditional Lionel motors are fine). How hard would it be to add a second motor to the single motor version, or retrofit sound to the postwar remake from '89 or so? Any ideas or other approaches appreciated. Thanks.

Years ago, when my younger son wanted a GG-1, I purchased an MTH one. I suggest you take a look at the Williams and MTH offerings.
RMT has also come out with a GG-1. I don't have one but if it is anything like their Budd (Buddy) cars, it will be a good value.
You might be able to find this one from WBB.
Amtrak - Semi-Scale Die-Cast GG-1
Always at the top of the Christmas wish list, this locomotive continues to be a popular choice year after year with good reason- the GG-1 is one of the most prized postwar Lionel items. Here is your chance to own an exact reproduction at a very affordable price.

Thank you. I am sure the RMT variant is very nice, but as others guessed he wants Amtrak livery. I will look for the WBB version but I am very tempted by the MTH version as it will have a more complete sound package and the kids really love the horns and other sounds, although command control is not necessary. i will check into ordering it. Thank you again, and if anyone has other suggestions those would be appreciated as well.
