So since a Viewliner baggage isn't going to be produced anytime soon in O scale, I'm shopping for heritage baggage cars. However, I can't seem to find a good prototype to start with. Anyone have some ideas as to good prototypes? Doors don't matter, I'll find a way to get those corrected. All that matters is it's a scale prototype and the body is good. Trying to go for an acceptable model of the cars that were largely retired/scrapped in 2015.

The MTH premier baggage car is pretty good if you want a smooth side. Not sure about fluting.

I'd really prefer fluting, but I'll consider it. Thanks.
How about the Atlas Zephyr ?

It's a great car, but I haven't started on a Rainbow era train yet.
CZ car is where to start. De-skirt and stripe. Some lasted to the mid 90s, at least one made it to the 2000s.
If you want one of the roll up door cars, they were converted ATSF cars, be better off getting a frame and a Budd roof then making the sides yourself.

I'll probably end up making the roll up door car or having a professional do it, but I was really hoping for something close to the ex-ATSF 73' cars that were replaced by the Viewliner II baggages. Some are still in service for axle count reasons.
Phase VI is the target scheme and I have a custom painter for that.

I know they made an Amtrak version, but this would still be appropriate for a Rainbow-era train. I'm trying to go for the 2010s.
After a fair bit more research, an MTH Phase III version seems like it is the best candidate to kitbash with. The fluting matches the prototype better than other mainstream models available. The only problem is figuring out how to remove the roof and replace it with a fluted roof to give the car more of a Budd feel, and then have the doors custom made. Any advice is much appreciated.
The MTH baggage is a good car to start with. However, I think the cars you are looking for were the former heritage fleet 85' coaches Amtrak converted at Beech Grove into baggage cars. The windows were removed and a single large door was placed in the middle. The Lionel coach would be a neat kit-bash project as you could place a very thin sheet of styrene across the window band and cut in your own door. I'd dump the lighting and remove the 3rd rail pick up shoes so you get less drag on the car.

I'm probably going to do both at some point, but likely the ATSF 73' baggage first. I just have to figure out how I'm going to do the roof for it. I think I know how the trucks will work out, I plan to cut the freight bearings off of 2 rail MTH trucks and use them as roller bearings to simulate the rebuilt trucks.
I got lucky a few York shows ago in the purple hall. A guy had two of the K Line cars NIB for $50.00 each. I was all over them. Here is a clip of the car in an Amtrak train. It is the 3rd car back after the GG-1.

I have the K-line and the GGD baggage cars in Amtrak. The GGD one is excellent but not easy to find. They were sold as separate sale cars along with the sets in ATSF.
K-Line leading GGD in this video. While the FP45s pulling are sub-par, the video with two FL9s and 3 E8s pulling seemed excessive!
