I didn't see this mentioned on this site:

2 days ago, on 9/25, Amtrak conducted high-speed tests with an Acela trainset in NJ on the NE Corridor. On the 23 mile straight stretch between Trenton & New Brunswick, as well as in Maryland - Delaware & other locations, the train hit 165 mph; in the future Amtrak hopes to upgrade sections of the NE Corridor (the former PRR 4-track main line) to regularly operate at speeds up to 160 mph. The Trenton Times had an article on the testing in Tuesday's paper; their web site is: NJ.Com.

Testing only occurred so far in NJ - Monday night/ Tuesday AM.

Testing "somewhere" between Wilmington, DE and Perryville, MD will occur tonight, sometime after 10:30 PM.

All the papers suggesting a record is to be broken are in correct - accept maybe the record for the Acela.  The UA Turbo Train ran past Princeton Junction in December of 1967 at 170.8 mph.

Here's a shot of the Acela running at 165 (to be confirmed) Tuesday at 2:20 AM.

Note the sparking catenary as the wires bounced.
