I used to fly a lot back in the early 80s but after I got married my road trip days were over but back then I enjoyed flying. The planes were not crowded, they served meals and in general the other passengers were a pleasant group. fast forward 10 years ago I went on several trips for my company, it was like taking a bus with wings. Crowded, noisy, rude obnoxious people the hassle at the airport security and restrictions, I really hated it. So for short trips I would consider a train instead of flying.

I remember climbing aboard Amtrak from Boston to Buffalo on my way home on a break from the tour. I was tired and hungry. It must have shown. A chef came over and asked if I wanted anything. I believe I boarded later in the night and he was closing. So I said I would eat anything he made me. I am pretty picky according to my friends but not that night. A sandwich would do. I still can't believe he asked. He was very kind and a people type person.

Anyways he made me a dinner plate with turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Probably more I don't remember. I was just amazed that he made it and how good it was. They didn't charge me very much. Back then, we didn't eat well. Usually once or twice a day. I got to relax after I ate, instead of driving an equipment truck after working and rushing on tour. It was something I still remember and I will always be grateful for. I traveled that way a few more times.

We always end up driving when we travel. It's just for money reasons. I can never save up much. I always check the prices of Amtrak and try to convince others that it would be better. Whoever I travel with always bawks at the price, or the amount of time, or some other reason not to take the train. I disagree. Someday I'll win! Time traveled in haste, is not the best use of time. Make it up somewhere else!

Let's see.........Five trips on Amtrak over the past three weeks. Four legs late two of them were 7 hours and 11 hours late. The leg that was on time I was berated for requesting a disable person seat  on Surfliner and hassled until I proved it by showing my prosthetic legs.  Let's talk about improving Amtrak before we talk about how bad planes are. Amtrak is the worst it's been since my first ride in 1973.
