I stumbled across this the other day while I was out galivanting:
From what I could see, it's a boxcar cut down to a gondola for hauling rail. Pretty cool. I don't know if this is common practice. I just thought it would be cool to share. This is on the Youngstown and Southeastern Railroad company near the intersection of Southern Blvd and Route 224 in Boardman. There is a siding there that goes along Boardman Park and it used to serve a brick or concrete company I think. I was too young to know what was there. I couldn't get more pics because the fuzz was nearby and could see me (also the laws and all that good stuff).
I think the Y&S is owned by a rail company that stores cars on sidings. As far as I know, the rails are in rough shape so this is what the line is good for. I'm basing that on Youtube videos though. I don't know a ton about the line. I just know there are a few companies along the line and it connects to CSX or Norfolk Southern down in the valley in Youngstown. It's a heck of a grade to get up to the point you see here. I think it ends in Negley, OH.
Just thought it was a cool photo worth sharing! I would be interested in hearing more about the railroad if anyone knows anything. I have a book that mentions it but I haven't had time to read it in depth yet.
