An old San Bernardino landmark
Former Member
I took this the other night (actually 1 am) while waiting for a train to come in so I could help the crew yard it. The old stack still looks good! Towering above an intermodal crane and FedEx trailer.
Calvin Hobbs, Sr. was the Stationary Fireman at the backshop for decades. They used a lot of steam there. That smokestack was his responsibility then, as was the noon whistle.
The whistle was broke for years but a couple years ago they fixed it. Still goes off at 8am, noon, and 5pm. If youre driving over the bridge it will scare the crap out of you if you dont know what it is.
I've heard the whistle many times. I'm glad they kept the stack in place. Speaking of landmarks, here's a shot you won't be able to get now since they've built a shopping center on second street.
