I recently uploaded ps3 steam software into a MTH Northern, software is: 20-3078-1 Santa Fe Northern .  On start up the engine makes a very annoying Beep-Beep-Beep noise 8 times on start up.  I have performed both feature and factory resets, neither of which gets rid of this annoying noise.

It must be part of the software.  If it is, can anyone recommend another Premier Northern software package?

thanks,

Bruce

The beeps are coming from you loading the chain files.

I would go back and reload the correct steam chain files- most likely you used an upgrade kit right?

So you use the chain files specific to stacker PS3/2 sets from here https://mthtrains.com/chainfiles

DO NOT use the chain files from a normal steam PS3 engine. Only use the *.mth sound file and not the complete chain files from your PS3 typical source download.

I would also review this https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...20DOCUMENT_FINAL.pdf

Again, step 1 for a PS3 steam upgrade kit install, load the correct chain files. In this case, I know from your original question this is a premier steam with normal large smoke unit (not the small ones like used in certain engines).

https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...am_Osmk_3528-CPF.zip

After you have uploaded that using consumer loader- yes it will still beep for one cycle. This is the normal chain file loading process. That said, it will go away once it power cycles and finally completes proper loading of the chain files.

Read this topic about beeps https://ogrforum.com/...e-won-t-stop-beeping

Again, in that above topic, @GGG did a great explanation of the beep codes and the process of how it should work in this post https://ogrforum.com/...7#152899749149831697

Step 2 is load ONLY the sound file from your new sourced sound files. Do not also load the entire chain file package- those chain files are for PS3 OEM steam which is the tender and boiler board style system and thus incompatible with PS3/2 stacker. This requires unzipping the packaged file as downloaded first to isolate the single *.mth sound file.

For this engine, one possible sound file is from that page https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...ction%20final_3v.mth

It's a PS2 3V 1meg style of sound file, so yes an upgrade over original protosounds, but remember you can use newer PS3 files and thus larger 4 meg premier sound files.

Also, looks like we might be able to choose an engine with either Passenger or Freight announcements, and get quilling whistle

Are you sure you aren't hearing this?  This is a bad chain file load beep code.

John, is correct you need to know exactly the characteristics of the beeping.  This is basic PS-3 info for a TECH.  Also basic knowledge on PS-32 versus PS-3 steam.  They are not the same.

If you have the morse code type beeping, you most likely cannot recover the board and it must go back to MTH for a reflash on the factory fixture.  G

FIXED!!

Thanks Vernon and John.  Your help with the new chain files helped tremendously.

Thje steam ps3 stacker boards are sure different.  They do not accept the regular steam ps3 chain files.

I loaded the chain file Vernon mentioned and it worked fine.  This MTH Prototype Northern now runs and performs great.  I purchased this MTH Engineering prototype engine in one of the MTH warehouse auctions.  It needed a lot of TLC, parts and skill in servicing.  I did NOT read the steam upgrade instruction manual pages 33 through 35 which does mention to use ps2 files as this board set does not support the regular chain files for ps3 steam.

Attached find a picture of this locomotive.  How many operators have prototype engines running on thier layout?  not many.  See picture attached.

Again, thanks for the help.

Bruce
