I got my hands on an old MTH 2 rail Challenger (DC version), that has a 3 rail tender. So it needs a lot of work. By the time I've bought all the parts, and done the work, I could have bought a new one. I just couldn't find one.

So I ordered parts from MTH (and a motor from Lionel for the other Williams version) and will start hacking away.

here I started converting the tender to 2 rail. I could have bought wheelsets, but I got this centipede assembly from MTH for the same money.

Trouble is it needs special mounting changes....

Joe, ….BTW, I have the earlier tender floors for your earlier tender truck, ….your model has the later cast truck frame, and it looks like they sent you an early 2 rail stamped steel truck assembly,…..lemme know if you need help buddy ….

Pat

the replacement 2 rail assembly is in a cast frame with 2 wheel pick-ups. The original stamped steel 3 rail sitting there was taken out!

Like everything in my life, I either have time or money, not both. So I scraped together money, and this project sat until now. I got some free time and slapped some new MTH parts inside this old engine. Trouble is I forgot to take pics as I went. So these pics are after what happened so far.

Smoke wires are separated and will go up in the shell. A single black wire goes to the frame. Only thing else is the 2 headlight wires shown going to the front.

The smoke unit replaced the 2 Seuth units and the shell was not set-up for it. I ordered the smoke funnel and attached it to a spare smoke unit. I placed a gasket on top. I had to fill the area above that gasket with some hot glue and caulk, to prevent excessive leaking if the engine comes in for maintenance.

There's an extra tender light that I should have researched. I shoved a LED in there for now.

here I'm playing with where to get power for the fireman's side of the engine (red wire). The stock set-up got it from the tender only I believe.

Fireman's side main drivers seem to be isolated. I reversed the trailing axles to utilize the MTH wiper set-up rubbing on the axles. Both side axle bearings are plastic.

Great that MTH had spare parts to help this project along. Most of those still required some adapting to be used.

I didn't check for standard wiring practices. I threw the pickup wires in there. I was thinking because it's PS3, polarity didn't matter. I will straighten up the wires when it runs.

If anyone follows along with any of this and needs any answers, just ask. When I get an hour or two to work on it, I just stab at it.

On most of my projects, things need to be redone once or twice to get it right. Some projects never panned out.

No, Sir. It could have I guess. The old stock one was already in place and only needed 2 locating holes drilled for the pins. There was something else different and I forget what that was.

I used the wheels for the front truck, but had to rework the axles they were on. I tried swapping axles but couldn't get the wheels off without wrecking the axle points. So I hand grinded the points and shortened them slightly to fit.
