Brief history.  My father passed about 10 years ago and in his collections were a couple boxes of "parts" cars, etc.  I just this year started going through the boxes.  Here is an engine that I cannot identify the wheels with rounded spokes don't match up to any photos I can find of 4-6-4 steamers.  Your help as always would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Bum

I may be wrong, but I'll chance to say that those Baldwin disk drive wheels are from a Pre-War and Post-War steam locomotive, which have different pony and trail wheel trucks, such as P.W steam locomotive #224, which has a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement:

I am not familiar, nor do I have knowledge and/or photos. of MPC steam locomotives.

The 8206 in 1972 was the first use of that Baldwin wheel since 1949. The sintered iron wheels were required for MagneTraction from 1950-on(save for the magnet-delete Korean war versions, which continued with the wheels, just no magnets).

Thank you Rob for the extra info.

I don't have any listing, or photos. for the MPC goodies, only the "Lionel Post War Library" list, but now, thanks to you Rob, I see the MPC steam locomotive #8206 with the Baldwin Disc Drive Wheels in the 4-6-4 wheel arrangement.

Bum,

After clicking onto the link I posted, click onto the left column listing of locomotives.

If, that don't work, then type: "Lionel Post War Library."

Before, I could not find those Baldwin Disc Drive Wheels on any 4-6-4 wheel arrangement steam locomotives, without the proper locomotive number, which Rob provided.

BUT!  I did find those Baldwin Disc Drive Wheels on 2-6-2 steam locomotives:
Pre-War (Inter-Net);
Post War the "Lionel Post War Library," which I posted

            AND
MPC (Inter-Net).

The 8206 was essentially a remake of the 665/2065(small Baldwin based Hudson type, w/ feedwater heater), with the Baldwin type disc wheels substituted.

In 1976 things got exciting at Fundimensions, with the 8206 being essentially continued with the 8603 C&O based on the old 2055(w/o feedwater heater, but a silver painted boiler front) and continuing the Baldwin type disc wheels and rubber tire traction. The wheels this time had been machined to give the appearance of painted rims. The 8206 and 8603 are very good pullers.

The big news in '76 though was the reappearance of the larger 2046/646 Alco based Hudson with MagneTraction. Lettered for NYC, it has a silver painted boiler front, and sintered iron "spoked"(simulated - a-la postwar) wheels... also a great runner & puller.

If you are going to run the engine, I would replace the original overly thick traction tire. This engine is known to waddle down the track. I would suggest MTH part # DE-0000027. This will eliminate most of the rocking. This engine also has a first generation electronic whistle and sound of steam. Pretty crude sound by today's standards, but back in '72 it was high tech. If adjusted factory correct, the whistle sounds somewhat similar to a Southern Pacific cab forward whistle.
