A New S Freight Car Survey

I guess scale folk are very different that High Rail folk.  There was low interest in almost all cars.

This could be due to

1) The cars they are interest in are not in the survey

2) Population the survey is going to is not representative of S Scalers

From what I understand, the survey choices were assembled from a separate "what would you like to see" type thread. (Although my mention of an Airslide hopper didn't make it...)

Now remember, Scalers (like me) are only about 15% of the total S market, so a consensus can be harder to reach with the smaller sample.  This was the author's first attempt at a survey and he's indicated he may have to refine things a bit.  I don't know how long he intends to keep the survey open, but he's promised to publish the results.

And, as we know: Ask 5 S Gaugers what they want and you get 18 different answers.

Respondents could reply on the basis of "what do I see most often on the prototype railroads, but don't have available for my S scale trains. I could use five or six of those."  Or they could take the approach that "I had a favorite Lionel circus train as a child, and would like to rekindle that memory with an an inimated giraffe car in S scale. But only one." Here in Oregon I most often see centerbeam flatcars with lumber loads. The loads used to be bare lumber, but in recent years most are wrapped in plastic. I've scratchbuilt a few centerbeams on 50-foot flatcars, but the real ones range from 60' to 72'. I don't like long cars, especially if they are top-heavy, so don't know what dimensions I'd quote to a willing manufacturer if one were found.

My railroad era is 35-52, so no modern cars are required/desired at all.

My railroad era is 35-52, so no modern cars are required/desired at all.

My modeling era is a somewhat elastic late-50's to early-60's.

But I also don't mind running the more contemporary models occasionally, thanks to the occasional wormhole:
