The "local" (50+miles away) hobby shop set up an open house in Cedar Rapids and my layout was included among all the HOs. Had 60 people come through the door. Some were just "look-see-bye", while others took pictures and asked about construction tips. Met several who are O gaugers so talked shop as time permitted. Some were vendors I see at train shows, other recognized me from shows (or maybe those post office FBI wanted posters). As our free lance layout town is named after a real Iowa town, I put together a handout telling why I was doing P&WV trains, how it was folded in with NW in 1964 and why I chose this town, then several paragraphs about layout construction and highlights.
The wife made up sheets for kids to fill in answers about things found on layout (Why is the yellow cab swerving on road (to run over dog), find motorcycle with standing rider, is the ambulance coming or going from greasy spoon diner? Kids had fun and we gave out small toys as awards.
What was highlight was family with two older boys. I was impressed the younger correctly identified the NW steamer as Y6 class and older identified the diesel as GP 35. They have Lionel system, figured they knew what was what, so handed them the remote and let them run the road. They were careful never speeding or trying to derail etc. Parents asked all kinds of quality questions about O gauge and suggestions, and I gave them my phone number to call if they had more questions.
Unfortunately, I did not take pictures so nothing to post.
