Picked this cheapie up at a local yard sale from the original owner.  Looks complete and hardly used.  The contents are somewhat different than

the description in the Greenberg Uncatalogued Guide.

Set 11570, 1966  Labels on box lid say "Joe the Motorists' Friend, Inc."

1061 2-4-2 Engine w/one traction tire

1062T LL Tender w/grounding strap

6402 type brown General-type flatcar w/elastics and cable reels, unstamped

6042 type blue gondola w/two white cannisters, unstamped

6167 red SP type unstamped caboose

12 027 curved, four 027 straight, one 1020 90 degree crossing

1025 transformer

1103-20 packet w/two 81-32 connecting wires and one CTC Lockon

I think it's interesting that after being involved in this hobby for over 40 years I am now finding uncatalogued sets for the first time.

You are zipping past all the oasis, trying get to Mecca. My favorite "finds" have been at yard sales. I bet a few members rekindled, or even developed, their O gauge interest after stopping at one. Stop in at an "oasis" once in a while, you never know what you'll find.

Joe the Motorist' Friend was very similar to the early Western Auto stores before Sears bought Western Auto.

At Christmas they always had a layout set up and a nice assortment of set and seperate sale items. And a kid could pick up a free Lionel catalog .

The chain may have lasted into the late sixties or early seventies.

Perhaps someone else can remember more.

The "Joe the Motorists' Friend, Inc" label on the box also includes

"36 Super Auto - Sports Stores.  Auto Accessories, Tires, Radios, Television, Sporting Goods.  Stores in Penna, Marland, Virginia and W. VA."

While I agree this is a good find, it's not something I collect, it's not Pennsy.  That said, it is availble to someone that has more of an interest in this type of collectable.
