My 3 yo son asked me a question today that I couldn’t seem to find the answer to with web searches.

“Are there any running ATSF warbonnet scheme F3’s we could get on today?”  (Of course he didn’t specify that verbally but pointed at that one)

While I know there are some F3’s out there in various road names, I don’t recall ever seeing anything regarding any Warbonnet F units that pull excursion trains one could purchase tickets to ride.  Or even any F units in operation that one could see that aren’t pulling excursions for that matter...  Are there any out there?  And if so, how can I get more info about them...   i.e. a website such as the “Friends of 261” site.  Thanks in advance!

I assume you mean REAL Santa Fe "Warbonnet" F style units. No, there are no "real" ones in operation on tourist lines. However, there is a pair of REAL Santa Fe Warbonnet F units (NOT F3s) in running condition, at the California State Railroad Museum, in Sacramento, CA. They take them out for "special occasions", but are on display inside the museum, which is open to the public, for a nominal entrance fee.

The Galveston, TX railroad museum has an operable set of Warbonnet F units and has them scheduled to pull an excursion on March 10.  Tickets are $150/per seat.

Technically, while the Galveston F's are painted as Santa Fe Warbonnets, they are ex-SP #6643 and ex-TN&O #365.

The A-B set at the California State Railroad Museum are the only true surviving Santa Fe F-units.

The OP asked about Warbonnet scheme F’s operating in excursion service.

Well, in fact the original poster asked about "any running Warbonnet scheme F3's we could get on today?", thus the answer is no, i.e. NO F3 units.

The Galveston museum has a set painted in the Warbonnet scheme that they use to lead excursions.

Jack is who mentioned REAL ATSF Warbonnet scheme F’s.

But; your point is noted.  The ones in Galveston aren’t REAL Santa Fe Warbonnet’s.

He was asking because his three year old likes the paint scheme.  He wants to ride a train pulled by engines painted that color.  I doubt a three year old cares if they actually operated in Santa Fe service in real life but, I could be wrong...

I fully agree, except THAT is NOT what the original poster asked about, i.e. the F3 model. Then again, some three year old can REALLY surprise you with their knowledge and questions. Been there done that.
