Many of my locomotives, especially Williams and those in the MPC era were purchased for $100 some even less and all running perfect. The secondary market is flooded with trains and collections right now. If you enjoy and can use the older technology, you can just about name your price! Comparatively speaking I pay more for rolling stock than I do for engines. There I'm in the $10-$100 range.

I purchased a K-Line GP38 with QSI for $25.00,   Engine did not run,  took the top off of the locomotive and removed the "Engineer" that was stuck in the motor flywheel and added new battery and it ran like a top.   I have updated it to ERR TMCC.

I purchase locomotives at a low price and then slowly update them with ERR TMCC.    With ERR's system you can add the AC/DC commander and then add the sound at the later date (easier to hide the total cost from the CFO (wife) of the railroad).  If I was 20 years or more younger I would just purchase the newest locomotives for MTH and Lionel, But I like updating the older locomotives.

Nope. Never bought a locomotive for $100. None for more than $100 either.

Did buy one for $70 once, and the guy threw in the cars, the track, the transformer and the box with it.

Most of my locos were bought in the $20 to $40 range. Did get one once for $8 that included a handful of tubular straight track pieces.

I picked up these 2 Willaims E-7's for $100 at a local show.  I was eyeing them up and the vendor asked me if I liked them in which I replied yes, they are nice.  He said I'll make you an offer you can't refuse.  I said ok, how much?  He said how does $100 sound?  I said I'll take them.  Now I would like to acquire either the MTH 70' Atlantic Coast Line aluminum cars in either purple and black or silver with purple letter and number boards.

I've bought plenty of locomotives for under $100.00, and never paid more than $150.00 for one. Overall, I've bought some pretty nice stuff since getting back into the hobby last year.

There it's settled. This thread breaks the all time record as being the one for the extremely close fisted hobbyist.

My club puts on a show twice a year.  They always have a table where they sell donated stuff. I spied a prewar American Flyer 561 K5 with tender on their table. Once I was done walking around and wasting money, I was walking by and noticed one of the HO guys was at the club table.  I thought, here's my chance, so I asked him how much. He said $10. After I picked my draw up off the flooor, I paid him $10, grabbed th train and ran before he realized his mistake. Took it to the clubhouse immediately, and it ran like a cheap.  E unit sticks badly, but for $10 I'm not complaining.

Being into postwar and pre-1994 modern era Lionel, finding locomotives for $100 or less isn't much of a challenge. The last piece that comes to mind is a 2055 027 hudson, missing the tender. I forget whether I paid $45 or $65. It needed a basic service, nothing more, and I had a tender to go with it.

I think prices vary across the country. They trend low in my local area, even when compared to some other areas within my state.

When I was in late grade school, I shoveled enough snow to buy a brand new AA set of the Mpc Aldo’s in the Western Maryland fireball scheme.  I still have them.  I clearly remember they were $99.95.

About 8 yrs ago, probably more, Lionel came out with 0-6-0 docksiders.  I got one for my birthday for $95.

All my modern equipment has been more pricey

Got  2 on this past Sunday at the Annapolis, MD Train Show.  Powered and dummy. Both for $100.

Powered: Williams GG1, PRR Silver, great shape, no blemishes, runs great. Traditional size.

Dummy: Williams GG1, PRR Red Solid Stripe, with Tru-Blast sounds. Great shape, no blemishes, traditional size.
