Knowing that L&N had their 2-8-4 M1 (Big Emma) locomotives made at two different manufacturers. Their first batch came out the Baldwin shops (#1950 - #1969). And the remainder came out of Lima (#1970 - #1991).
Did they look exactly alike? If not, what were the differences? Did L&N have a preference to liking one builder's version above the other?
Has any "O" scale manufacturer ever made a good model of Big Emma?

According to Steamlocomotive.com the two series were just about identical by the specs. 25x32 bore/stroke, 265 psi, 65,290 #te. I'm sure there were nuances between the two that weren't obvious to the casual eye but they must have been pretty similar.
The Baldwin versions had webbed spoked drivers. The Lima version had boxpok drivers. There may have been other details.
You need to get a copy of the December, 1972 issue of Trains magazine. It contains a large article about the L&N M1 class and was written by L&N public relations employee/historian Charlie Castner.
I found a copy of the December 1972 Trains on eBay, but it already sold. Still, if you are interested in the M1, Mr. Castner's article is a very detailed resource.
