Heres a nice video showcasing this locomotive. ( Not mine)  I'm not sure if Daniel is a forum member.

Too big for my layout and wallet. Hope folks that got them enjoy them.

If he's not he should be. Nice video. I hope folks with these add a water pit or whatever the term is to make prototypical use of the tender smoke feature.

yes, but the front in catalog is black not silver as shipped.

Jim,
There is no picture on the front of the catalog.

I do understand why you think it is black. I think that because of the lighting, the front part is darker and can be seen as black (shades of "Black Bonnets"!), but, the rear portion is obviously silver.

FWIW, I don't care for the silver either.

Has anyone seen a photo of a real Niagara painted silver?

If you mean the smoke box yes they’re was a photo floating around.   It’s tough  to tell exactly in the black and white photos but it’s for sure much lighter than the rest of the boiler.   I have very little knowledge of the nyc rr but it’s hard to imagine they used a silver.  Probably more like a graphite or grey color.    I was hoping for all black myself.   Maybe mine will find a paint shop lol.

Jim,
Yes, In the book "Know Thy Niagara's" there are photos of 6001 with a silver smokebox on pages 63, 64 & 65. Also on page 51 there is an ad with a drawing of 6000 with a silver smokebox and another photo near the back of the book. I am going to presume the photos of 6001 are publicity shots as one photo shows some beauties pulling the loco along on ropes.

That said, I didn't see any other photos of the engines with silver throughout the book.

Floquil used to make a bright silver and one called "old silver". The latter would have been a better choice.

They also made "Graphite"!

Floquil old silver is still bright.  I used to use it quite a bit in modelling.  Looked just like dull aluminum...  still light in color.

Im very happy to see pictures of silver painted smokeboxes on real niagaras.  Looks like lionel is giving variety in each release...  the silver is growing on me now that i know they were built that way...  my 6013 is on the way...

Scrapiron,  I would run the first Niagara and see how reliable it is before thinking of a second.

I bought two Vision Line GG1s when they came out.  Neither has worked correctly since I first received them. I have been running my GG1 #4935 to run-in the tight gears as suggested by Dean at Lionel.  After a year, it has not improved.  It is at Lionel now for repair.  The second Vision Line GG1 #4913 has been back to Lionel twice and is now back for a third time.  It will not move.

The Niagara engines are looking good, but they too will have to prove themselves to be worthy of our dollars.

Yes, I bought one Niagara #6013 after swearing I would not.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Larger dealers may be receiving pallets, not boxes of trains.  The pallets do not ship as quickly by freight.

I suspect that is what is happening. I'm expecting one from the Muffin's. I have not gotten a Fed Ex notice yet.

I cannot imagine a worse time to receive a shipment like this. Pallets of trains arriving when you are trying to pack your store for York.

Peter

Hi PETER,

I too am awaiting my NIAGARA from MR MUFFINS.  I e mailed JEFF there and got this reply.  Hope this helps.

The Niagaras are shipping directly from our Lionel distributor. Hurricane Michael delayed their arrival to him, but he’s expecting them within the next couple days and will ship them as soon as they arrive; once they do, we’ll provide you with tracking info.

Jeff Nelson

York is now the major priority for most dealers.  This is their time to make up for a slow summer. I bought mine on Ebay from (lisbest), Nassua Hobby.  My regular supplier could not guarantee he had an extra Niagara #6013.  I waited to see video of the engine before I purchased mine.  I did not pre-order.

Mine is in UPS hands and headed this way.

John, I am interested in the Niagara too; let us know when it arrives and gets tested.  I am especially interested in the whistle and if it sounds the same as the one in Daniel's video.

I wonder who at Lionel makes the decisions on paint color. A bright silver smoke box and blackened side rods? To me that's a big disappointment. Anybody bother looking at photos?  Almost as bad as painting over the boiler bands on the 5 Star General. I really hope it doesn't look that bad in person for the price I'm paying.

John and Skip,

I know there are legitimate questions about smokebox color but I love the silver smokebox and the blackened rods, too. I have not run the Beast more than a few feet, but my initial impression is that this may very well be a historic issue.

I have two Vision GG-1's and had serious issues with three others I sent back. I am now running my JLC Green five stripe and I love it. I also run the Vision PC GG-1 and I am very happy with it.

Shiny rods and valve gear arrived today. Mine will be getting a makeover to look more like as built in the builders photos.
