Does anyone know of any good railfanning locations along or not too far from I-70 between Terre Haute Indiana and the St Louis area?  (I know some good railfanning sites in the St Louis Metroeast region are not in the greatest of neighborhoods, so I'm trying to avoid those kinds of situations, too.)

I'm planning on making a railfanning trip to see the F-units near Peoria and the transcon near Galesburg.  I thought I might just make a circle trip along I-70 towards St Louis, up I-55 to Peoria and then back out to Dayton if there was some interesting train stuff to see along I-70 in Illinois.  (I've already been to the Museum of Transport in STL, so I don't plan to head that far on this trip.)

Thank you!

As a retired trucker I know just about every mile of that blasted freeway. However I have been off the road so long as to think the entire .. terrain and vegetation has undergone changes.

My spot was actually near St Louis on the east bank of the River. I think of hot metal cars coming out of the mill there. And on the other side was some brutal connections where the UP main has to wiggle to get through to the river bridge. I suppose the yards are still there, but you will find little to safely watch from the interstate proper.

In the same area to the north, trains were intimate in the towns and state/us highways. One had to be very careful in certain places not to leave the trailer hanging over the track at the light. Or you will be ticketed heavily. US 20 comes to mind.

You will find Texas, Colorado and some western states more friendly to watching trains from the interstate. Much more so than the eastern states.

I remember visiting once and passing a couple of times, a RR museum/operating

shortline just off SOME Interstate in eastern Illinois.  They had one of the Chinese

steam engines in operation.  Haven't been that way lately and can't now find it on

the Road Atlas, although it used to be marked.  I think it might have been off I-74 farther north (seems more likely) of your route.  I'd be curious to know if it is still

there?  I also one of the Chinese steamers in operation at an Iowa TCA convention

some time ago. Wonder if any of those are still operating anywhere in this country?
