I should have clarified. The New York announcement was something like 'train to New York ' which would have been announced right before the dreaded 'change at jamaica' lol! The announcement does not say 'this station is New York' as it does for the others I listed. Being a diesel it clearly would not be allowed in the tunnels to penn station. At least not regularly 😀

The photograph referenced in the link in 645's post is probably not Long Island City but rather the layup yard at Richmond Hill. Many Inbound trains from the east would terminate at Jamaica and move to a layup yard just west of Jamaica and North of Morris Park. The locomotives were serviced and turned at Morris park and coupled to the waiting eastbound trains at Richmond Hill. They would move to Jamaica to meet electric connections at Jamaica .The layup yard still serves diesel powered trains today that terminate at Jamaica.

Some westbound trains went through to Hunterspoint avenue and Long Island City The coductor would announce those respective names for these stations. Locomotives would deadhead back to Morris park for servicing and turning and return to Long Island city for the afternoon Eastbound service.

In the early 1950s, there were still a few locomotive hauled trains which went to Pennsylvania station. DD1 electrics would take over for a G-5 or a CLiner at Jamaica and make the trip into Penn. Some of the DD-1s were painted in a Tichy inspired scheme.
