leaving today for a New Orleans vacation.
Does anyone know if there are any hobby shops, train stores or antique shops in the area?

Lot's of antique shops but that's about it. There are a few mom and pop hobby stores but about 5 years ago when I went looking they didn't amount to much. There are some decent RC Hobby Shops but nothing train related (at least not O-Scale). My wife is from there and I get down there pretty much once a year. A local may know more, but I sure didn't find anything when I looked.
Enjoy your trip!

About 50 miles NW of NO off I-12, Bigger and better with three layouts running in my view. Check their hours and days open.
Charlie in Baton Rouge, LA
Just arrived and down by the wharhose fistic, convention hall. Have no car but planing to walk a bit. Will be in the French Quarter area on Saturday. Thank you everyone for your replies.
Well, just my opinion but, any and every time I've EVER been to New Orleans, the LAST thing on my mind was a train store! There is so much to see and do, besides New Orleans Jazz, plus the restaurants are generally out of this world (I always frequented Pearl's Oyster Bar, first, which was/is just off the French Quarter tourist trap).
HW got it right! ☺

Hot Water - I couldn't agree with you more!
I've been to the Crescent City nine times and never have I thought about model trains. ( I do enjoy riding the street cars in NO ) Perhaps because I'm a musician who deeply appreciates all of the fabulous music and the rich history of the music that NO has to offer, trains are just not at the forefront of my mind whenever I'm in that wonderful city. To me New Orleans is a feast for the ears, eyes, and palate. So much wonderful food, and architecture too... so much to do. I can and will shop for trains when in any other city but not when I'm in NO. Of course, to each his own ... I respect anyones wish to do whatever they wish when in the Crescent City.
